Mace comes from the same tree as the nutmeg - the mrystica fragrans, found in the Spice Islands or Moluccas (Indonesia). Technically known as the aril of the nutmeg seed, it is the stunning red, lacy structure enclosing the seed. Once removed from the shell, its parts are called blades, and it is further processed. Interestingly, mace is of much more value than nutmegs (the seeds inside mace covering) due to its rare yield: for every hundred pounds of nutmeg, we only get a single pound of mace.
